November 14, 2003, You Won't See Me
The President will be visiting London next week, and has commented that he has no problem with the massive protests that are expected to greet his arrival, disingenuously saying "I don't like war either". I suppose he could have said "bring it on". Although security measures will doubtless be impressive, it does not appear that Britain will enforce the cordon sanitaire that the Bush Administration was asking for (ostensibly evacuating Central London for the President's visit). (Query how he's going to pull off the GOP National Convention next year in even harder to manage New York City? I guess protests will be unrestricted-- in the outer boroughs and New Jersey)
The President has been remarkably good about having protests staged far away from wherever he is here as a "security measure", and certainly, this sort of thing is also easier to arrange in other countries he visits that are a tad more authoritarian still. Though, in Australia, some protests managed to make it to his attention, and it seems that this will be the case in Britain. The President (and presumably PM Blair) will have staged photo ops with families of British soldiers killed in service of this particular Anglo-American War of Aggression, while other such families (the loudmouths, presumably) will not participate.
The pre-war protests in Britain were, if anything, better attended and more vigorous than the protests stateside, but the Blair Bush Project was going to happen unabated, damn what their actual constituents wanted. So here we are. No matter. I think a good number of Britons are going to get their feelings heard on this one.

Isn't Bush facing domestic criticism for not visiting the families of American troops killed in action? Or is he doing so without creating much fanfare about such events?
If the former, won't visiting the families of British soldiers have serious adverse effects on his approval ratings in the U.S.?
