We won't even begin to talk about the implications of a CNN poll showing the President expanding his slim lead over Senator Kerry (even more with Ralph "Vote for Me Because You Like What You See in Washington" Nader). Note to self: its April-- this doesn't matter. Besides-- all bets are off given that Osama will be captured by morning (yet another prediction I've probably fucked up).

What I meant to talk about (write about? blog about?) was the abrupt decision of King Abdullah of Jordan to belay his scheduled White House visit with Prince Bandar's favorite wind-up toy. It seems that Prince Abdullah, whose Hashemite Kingdom "hosts" oh, millions of Palestinians, was a little pissed at President Bush's love-fest with Israeli PM Sharon last week, where he "kind of" made living with those Palestinians a wee bit harder by pulling the rug out from under (1) their vaunted right of return and (2) Israel's ultimately withdrawing from virtually all of the West Bank.

I mean-- Bush had his reasons. Its not, like, fair to say the United States can merrily roll through an Arab country and hold on to the choice pieces (in Iraq, that would mean anything with some black gunk under it) and tell Israel that it has to give all of its stolen Arab land back. (Golda Meir-- herself endlessly quotable-- noted that Moses had to be Jewish, because who else would wander for forty years in the Middle Eastern desert to lead his people to the one place that didn't have any oil... but I digress).

Its sort of this tenet (no real pun intended, as in "Oslo to Mitchell to Tenet") of American foreign policy when dealing with the Israeli-Palestinian fiasco to at least PRETEND to do the "honest broker" thing. That meant that regardless of how powerful the pro-Israel lobby and Congressional constituency is, the President always-- always-- plays the heavy and says "yes, but I have to keep Israel honest in the interest of overall regional stability".

Well fuck that: there are old Jews in Florida. And Bush owes them. Big time. So he'll give them a nice Likudnik bone that will make him the best friend Israel ever had (in the eyes of really stupid people-- the kind who would vote for Pat Buchanan and THINK they were voting for Al Gore, say...). Hey, last time, a bunch of old Jews really helped out the President. This time, maybe they'll vote for Pat Paulson, or Pat Robertson, or Pat Benatar, or... anyone, of course, EXCEPT the Democrat guy with some Jewish blood on the ballot (like last time, when good old stupid old Jewish people from Palm Beach County helped make sure that nice Joe Lieberman didn't lose his job as a senator).

Because that's what its about, baby. Bush merrily sacrificed decades of American policy to try to shore up his position in one swing state. Just as he doesn't care how many Iraqis (or Americans) die, in order to ensure that his June 30th transition date comes and goes with the United States OFFICIALLY out of the Iraq business (even if its just nomenclature-- hey, that's everything). Just win.

Now, if King Abdullah only understood DEMOCRACY...

Oh, I don't think he was just trying to please Jewish old people. His principal constituency, Evanglical Christians, very much want him to keep Israel safe for the second coming of Christ. If he gets some bang for his buck in Florida, that's really a side benefit of his mission from God.

Funny, just a couple of days ago I was saying to myself, "You know, Self, King Abdullah is the one who must be really plotzing--I wonder what he's gonna do?"

What Mamayo said. The Fundies (who are rampant in the part of the Southern Appalachians this overeducated hillbilly inhabits) have seriously confused Likud with the Biblical Children of Israel. There is nothing that is going to erase the equations "Palestian=Terrorist" and "Israel=Confirmation of my Apocalyptic views any time soon.
(And didn't Abdullah appear in a bit part on Star Trek/Deep Space 9? Not that it means anything.)

Yeah, what you said. Even I agree that shoring up the Florida Jewish vote (which, let's face it, he's not going to get-- except by accident... again)
was secondary-- we are seeing Bush's view of the new Middle East-- where crony-capitalism meets politics.
Land, oil fields-- you steal it fair and square, you get to keep it, right?

I just won't be pleased when really desperate maniacs start detonating themselves in Times Square. (But then, the President's likeliest response to dead new Yorkers will be (once again) "fuck 'em, they didn't vote for me).

Agree with the above comments, but am miffed with Kerry for telling Russert that he supports (!) the new Bush 43 policy.
Just when 95% of the Arab Americans had decided they could never again vote for GW, and were lining up for Kerry! (About 90 % voted for GW in the last election because they remembered Baker and Bush 41 actually giving Arabs a fair shake with respect to Israel. But their hopes were dashed -- as Bush 43 says, he goes to a "higher father" than 41 for advice.)

I wonder if Kerry know how many Arab American votes are at stake?

Hate to tell you this but it's not just the Christian right. After 911 a few of us non-Christian/non-Jewish (for that matter non-religious) sorts noticed that the same kind of fanatics are blowing up random civilians in Israel as flew planes into the WTC.
Have any of you read Hamas' statements on Israel? Or the PLO stance? They don't want peace, they don't want land. They want Israel totally gone.
Quite frankly, I think the Zionists were totally bats to take land in the midst of all their enemies for a homeland (they have some of the same 'it once was and should be again' issues the Arabs have, IMO). But that was over 50 effing years ago. The Arabs need to get over it already.
