July 14, 2004, Allons Enfants Patrie...

Apparently, in a Bastille Day fireworks demonstration gone horribly wrong in Iraq, someone inadvertently detonated a car bomb near the "until recently" Green Zone, and now the "protected enclave that includes government offices and the USA and UK embassies", said explosion killing 11 and wounding dozens.

Well, you know how these crazy French holiday celebrants can be: they just read one thing and then jumping to all the wrong conclusions-- in this Baghdad case, evidently failing to read the warning labels on those instructions imploring the user to get the hell away from the fireworks and not use them in crowded areas, say, where hundreds of people are lining up to apply for jobs.

This, of course, is the biggest fatal accident of its kind in Baghdad since "sovereignty" was handed over from interim puppet government A to interim puppet government B. Obviosuly, the USA and UK have solved everything there with this smooth, UN-sanctioned (for a change) interim government thing... too bad that this kind of accident seems to be common in Iraq-- and will probably make elections there too dangerous to hold by the January deadline (or anytime...).

The Iraqis seem to have that in common with us (of course, stateside, with the mere possibility of those kind of accidents, safety dictates we just "stay the course" with the Imperium-- no elections needed, thanks... too dangerous anyway...)

"Don't Eat the Yellow Jello"

As part of the effort to have peaceful and loving delegates, the Republican Convention managers will be serving Jello to the delegates prior to Bush's appearance to accept the nomination. This Jello will be doped with a mix of the drug Ecstacy.\, which will kick in by the time W takes the podium.
If you can get in, it should be a lovefest. Literally, raving conservatives.

Dear TD & Wallace,
Happy Bastille Day.
Thanks to Francophiles like you, their "jour de gloire est arrive." They never were too good with the whole "contre nous de la tyrannie" stuff, unless we saved them. Aux armes citoyens (Hah). Formez les battallions (you've got to be kidding). Marchon, Marchon (Backwards?) and then the big finish with "Formez les battallions" again. (Boy, they say it twice, and never do it once). But with your help, they aspire to the mantle of Leader of the Free World. Hope you're proud.

Well, Crabcake, but for the French, and their critical intervention against an otherwise superior British force during the Revolutionary War, this nation would probably never have come to be...

Yes, we have returned the favor, more than once actually... but then, I believe it was Clausewitz or Bismarck or Karl Rove (might have been George Washington, actually) who said "Nations don't have friends; they have interests", meaning France helped us because it was in its interest to do so, and we later helped France because it was in our interest to do so.

Au contraire, btw, to your suggestion of France's aspirations: France is very familiar with its place in the world, and is simply trying to make the most of it.

It is the American nation that has delusions of its own grandeur, right now, that with more military spending than the next 10 or 15 countries combined, is being played to a draw by Medieval-thinking rag-tag insurgents.

"Most Convention Delegates Will Stay on Boats on Hudson"

An overwhelming 70% of Republican delegates will not even set foot in Manhattan, other than go to Madison Square Garden for convention activities.
Seems like we went to all the trouble of setting up a police state for nothing.

Perhaps not a Bastille Day celebration. Perhaps they were celebrating the 56th anniversary of the ouster of the monarchy and the establishment of the Iraq Republic by the military...

Would you guys at least honor the memory of the dead French who helped us gain our independence?
Who cares about the rest, and that means Napoleon, Monsieur Vichy, Charles DeGaulle, Jack Shirac and all Quebecans!

Posted by Freedom Jim at July 14, 2004 06:04 PM

I'll consider it, Freedom Jim, although the French were just acting in their own interests (surprise!) at the time-that whole enemy of my enemy is my friend thing.
In the meantime, I will honor the late Mr. French of Family Affair, and the burly actor Victor French, of Highway to Heaven. Or would that be Mr. Freedom and Victor Freedom.
In closing, Whoopie for Whoopi, who got off the Slim Fast quicker than Bill Clinton at McDonalds.
